China censored this photo of two athletes. Was it for a perceived Tiananmen massacre reference?

China appears to have censored a photo of two Chinese hurdlers embracing each other after a race because their lane numbers were unintentionally linked to the 1989 Tiananmen massacre.

The image shows Lin Yuwei, from lane 6, and Wu Yanni, from lane 4, hug after the women's 100 meter hurdles final at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

When they stood together, the stickers representing their lane numbers formed "6 4", a pairing widely believed to be a reference to June 4, 1989.

On that day, cars Chinese military tanks entered the capital Beijing in a bloody crackdown to evacuate students. Democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square.

Beijing is tightly controlling mentions of this event, removing all mention of it from the Internet in China and hastily removing all mention of it on social media, including seemingly harmless moments when the numbers 6, 4 and 89 appear together and have nothing to do with Tiananmen.

The race takes place on October 1, China's national holiday, a sensitive time when authorities are more vigilant for any signs of dissent that could distract from the celebrations concept.
